{"id":404,"date":"2018-10-17T13:03:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T13:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/katrina.effexhost.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/17\/wordsmith-wednesday-want-to-get-a-real-feel-for-the-forties-cindy-vincent\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T00:24:32","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T00:24:32","slug":"wordsmith-wednesday-want-to-get-a-real-feel-for-the-forties-cindy-vincent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifewithkatie.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/17\/wordsmith-wednesday-want-to-get-a-real-feel-for-the-forties-cindy-vincent\/","title":{"rendered":"Wordsmith Wednesday: Want to Get a Real Feel for the Forties? | Cindy Vincent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/Swell-Truworth-Apprentice-Homefront-Mystery-ebook\/dp\/B07DCVSGMP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Get a Real Feel For the Forties\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgBBTO-JXggceQcw1nI18PJ6i6pT7THTBME4_qswd_9mG8R81o4yGRHh0cu2aYl80at28n39ZtkqywjHv0p6VvcY_MFYUMG7_Uo4hPC04YwrVDA49zQ89T4pYsMuYhM-s7bbqXULCDbRrg0\/s320\/Swell+Time+for+a+Swing+Dance+-+Freebie+Announcement.png\" alt=\"Get a Real Feel For the Forties\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"900\" data-original-width=\"1200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thank you, Katrina, for hosting me here today!\u00a0 As I\u2019m sure you know, I have a real<br \/>\nfascination with the 1940s.\u00a0 And having<br \/>\nreleased my second WWII mystery novel, <i>Swell<br \/>\nTime for a Swing Dance<\/i>, I think I\u2019ve also racked up about a gazillion hours<br \/>\ndoing research!\u00a0 Now people ask me how<br \/>\nthey might find out more about the era.\u00a0 So<br \/>\nhere\u2019s my recommended \u201cquick list,\u201d for those who want to get a real feel for<br \/>\nthe forties . . . and WWII.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I\u2019d suggest that people start by watching these old<br \/>\nblack-and-white movies:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>1.\u00a0 <i>Casablanca<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>First on my list is, of course, one of the most famous<br \/>\nmovies of all time, <i>Casablanca<\/i>.\u00a0 With the war as a backdrop, we see the<br \/>\nromance between Rick and Ilsa, and one of the most iconic final scenes ever<br \/>\nshown on the silver screen . . . or on your big screen TV, as the case may<br \/>\nbe.\u00a0 Be sure to get out the tissues,<br \/>\nbecause you\u2019re going to need them, folks!<br \/>\nAs an author, I also find this movie to be very skillfully and tightly<br \/>\nplotted.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>2.\u00a0 <i>Mrs.<br \/>\nMiniver<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This movie shows what life was like in England during the<br \/>\nwar, and especially during the Blitz, those horrible months when Hitler bombed<br \/>\nEngland\u2014relentlessly.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>3.\u00a0 <i>Since<br \/>\nYou Went Away<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This movie has some similarities to <i>Mrs. Miniver<\/i>, but it\u2019s set on the American homefront during the<br \/>\nwar.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>4.\u00a0 <i>Confessions<br \/>\nof a Nazi Spy<\/i> <\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Based on the real-life case of Rumrich Nazi spy ring in the<br \/>\nU.S., the term \u201cFifth Column\u201d is mentioned.<br \/>\nFifth Column essentially refers to enemies already within a country,<br \/>\nready to help take over when their army invades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>5.\u00a0 <i>Stormy<br \/>\nWeather<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This one is purely for fun, with fantastic music by Fats<br \/>\nWaller, Lena Horn, and my favorite, Cab Calloway. Here\u2019s a clip with Cab<br \/>\nCalloway and the Williams Brothers:<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_8yGGtVKrD8\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_8yGGtVKrD8<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>6.\u00a0 <i>The<br \/>\nMaltese Falcon<\/i>\u00a0 <\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Yup, I\u2019ve just recommended another Bogart film.\u00a0 It couldn\u2019t be helped, since this movie was<br \/>\nconsidered the best mystery\/thriller of the year.\u00a0 And believe me, you won\u2019t really \u201cget\u201d Bogart<br \/>\nuntil you see him as Sam Spade.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Now that you\u2019ve watched all these movies, let\u2019s move on to<br \/>\nsome books.\u00a0 While there are tons and<br \/>\ntons of books written about WWII, here are a few of my favorites:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>1.\u00a0 <i>Those<br \/>\nAngry Days<\/i> by Lynne Olson<\/b><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Those-Angry-Days-Roosevelt-Lindbergh\/dp\/0812982142\/\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Those-Angry-Days-Roosevelt-Lindbergh\/dp\/0812982142\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>2.\u00a0 <i>Sons<br \/>\nand Soldiers<\/i> by Bruce Henderson<\/b><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sons-Soldiers-Untold-Escaped-Returned\/dp\/0062419099\/\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sons-Soldiers-Untold-Escaped-Returned\/dp\/0062419099\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>3.\u00a0 <i>Wolves<br \/>\nat the Door<\/i> by Judith Pearson<\/b><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wolves-Door-Americas-Greatest-Female\/dp\/159921072X\/\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wolves-Door-Americas-Greatest-Female\/dp\/159921072X\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>4.\u00a0 <i>The<br \/>\nHollywood Canteen<\/i> by Lisa Mitchell and Bruce Torrence<\/b><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hollywood-Canteen-Greatest-Generation-Beautiful\/dp\/1593932790\/\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hollywood-Canteen-Greatest-Generation-Beautiful\/dp\/1593932790\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>5.\u00a0 <i>Unbroken<\/i><br \/>\nby Laura Hillenbrand<\/b><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unbroken-World-Survival-Resilience-Redemption\/dp\/0812974492\/\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unbroken-World-Survival-Resilience-Redemption\/dp\/0812974492\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Last, I\u2019d suggest visiting a museum or two.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>1.<\/b>\u00a0 If you\u2019re ever in New Orleans, please take<br \/>\ntime out to visit the <b>National WWII<br \/>\nMuseum<\/b>.\u00a0 Not only is it one of the<br \/>\ntop museums in the country, but it\u2019ll give you an education like nothing<br \/>\nelse.\u00a0 It\u2019s really one of the best ways<br \/>\nto learn about the war. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/\">https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here\u2019s a bit about the movie that\u2019s shown there every<br \/>\nhour.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen it several times, and I<br \/>\nnever leave dry-eyed.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZUIxPagAI5s\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZUIxPagAI5s<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>2.<\/b>\u00a0 Finally, here\u2019s a link to the <b>Pacific War Museum<\/b> in Fredericksburg,<br \/>\nTexas, another excellent museum to visit.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificwarmuseum.org\/\">http:\/\/www.pacificwarmuseum.org\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And there you have it, my quick list for learning more about<br \/>\nthe forties and WWII!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thanks again, Katrina, for hosting me.
